Halloween Mayham
Ever since I was a little girl, I always got excited for Halloween season. Mainly because I loved to dress up in costumes and pretend I was someone other than myself. Make no mistake, I didn't need Halloween to do that, because as a kid I would dress up and play pretend A lot. For me aside from the candies I would collect, something fascinated me around the topic of spooky characters. Ghosts, Witches, Vampires.
My top favorite Halloween movies as a kid and still are: Addams Family, Halloween Town, Hocus Pocus, and Double Double Toil & Trouble (with the Olsen twins). What comes in close seconds were The Witches of Eastwick, Death Becomes Her, Beetlejuice, and Nightmare on Elm Street (love Freddy Krueger) . I still can't believe to this day my mom would allow me to watch Witches of Eastwick and Death Becomes Her and Freddy as a young 8 year old. But I did grown up with two much older brothers and by that time, I had already seen the God Father, Scarface, and Rocky. So these movies were nothing compared to the drugs and crime I had already watched on TV with my big bros LOL. I also enjoyed watching the Michael Myers series Halloween, with Jamie Lee Curtis. I don't care what anyone else says but the old school horror films are by far the best ones yet.
My top favorite Halloween TV shows are: Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Angel, Charmed, True Blood, and Vampire Diaries. Buffy definitely is my top go to Halloween TV show hands down. Maybe because it is nostalgic for me, I remember watching that show as a tween growing up. It really gave me a sense of strong female influence. That always resided deep inside me, so Buffy is a show I will always hold dear to my heart. Dealing with COVID second Wave, I would recommend all these movies and TV shows to binge watch if your in the market to find stuff to watch while maintaining isolation during this time.
When I was about 8 or 9 my cousin Anna would get all dressed up in spooky costumes. She would help me get dressed up, and sometimes she would apply fake nails to my hands and I just loved them! That is what got me hooked to long nails. Obviously they were temporary within a week they would fall off, but the moment I turned sixteen, and made my own money I was on the hunt for a good nail place to get me some of those claws.
Over the years my costumes for Halloween were based on my current obsessions at the moment. My earliest memory of Halloween, I was a witch with this amazing pointed black hat. Then, I was Belle from Beauty and the Beast, my costume for Belle was AMAZING. I had the yellow ball gown exactly in the movie just kid size, it had the tussle underneath to make it really poofy, the color was bang on exact as the movie, I wore the costume not only for Halloween but for every day after that until I wore out the poor dress and had to get rid of it. That was a sad day for me. One year I was the pink power ranger. Yes, I was one of those kids who were obsessed with the power rangers at one point. As I got older, my tastes in costumes matured. Later on in life, I dressed as Poison Ivy from Batman. Then a vampire, and then a witch once again but a little more sexier. But I have to say my best adult costume to date was when I dressed as Cleopatra. We had a Halloween dance to raise money for my nephews hockey team. So I went as Cleopatra. I went all out, bought the wig, got the dress, and the jewelry, the crown. I did the make up. All I was missing was a group of minions following me around so I could give them orders and they could serve me food and drinks as I lounged.
This year even though Halloween may not be the same, I will still carve a pumpkin, and even though there may not be trick-or-treater's with province regulations put out there, I will still continue to watch my spooky entertainment as if it were like any other Halloween. What do you do for Halloween? Do you celebrate? Do you do something special? Even if you don't have kids do you do anything for the time of year?
Peace, Love, Joy
